Daylight Saving Time
Michael Averbook knows what he should do to cope with the start of daylight-saving time, when clocks jump ahead one hour.
But with a fraternity mixer on tap for Saturday night, the University of Michigan freshman said turning in earlier “probably isn’t going to happen.”
“I hate losing an hour of sleep,” he said. “It’s probably going to be pretty bad.”
Daylight-saving time kicks in at 2 a.m. Sunday, and it’s bad news for the sleep deprived, which is pretty much all of us, nowadays.
Todd Arnedt, director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine program at the University of Michigan Sleep Disorders Center, suggested taking a nap on Sunday. “But not too close to bedtime,” he said. “A good rule of thumb for a nap is to keep it to 30 minutes to an hour, in the late morning, early afternoon.”
Losing that hour can lead to sleepiness, and yes, you should be careful about being drowsy behind the wheel or operating machinery.
Try sleeping a bit more for the next few days, adhere to a regular bedtime, and be careful about drinking or taking stimulants too late at night, said Arnedt.Sound sleepers adjust quickly, though for some, such as the patients at the U-M center who are experiencing sleeping disorders, it may take substantially longer.
That’s not much consolation to people like Chris Stier, 56. “I’m really bitter about it,” she said. She enjoys going to the gym in the morning, so, she said, “I already go to bed by 10.”
